Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA) ‘Technical Working Group on Private Sector Involvement in Human Resources for Health’ (PSI-HRH-TWG) based at Duke University

To assist the Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA) in its analysis and approaches to address the human resources for health (HRH) crisis, a Private Sector Involvement in the Human Resources for Health, Technical Working Group (PSI-HRH-TWG) and a Secretariat has been formed at Duke University.   The PSI- HRH-TWG will support greater understanding of the private sector role in the HRH crisis.  It is anticipated the TWG will evolve during 2008 to a full Task Force should resources be secured to support that continuing effort.  Duke Global Health Institute and Duke University will serve as the Secretariat to support the TWG and seek development for the formation of the TF.  Between January and June 2008, the Secretariat and PSI-HRH-TWG is providing to the GHWA:

  1. A summary of the work and recommendations that resulted from the Duke University “African Healthcare Worker Shortage: Forum on Private Sector Responses”, November 29 – December 1, 2007,
  2. Duke conference insights to the broader audience participating at the Kampala Forum through a breakout session,
  3. A Skill Building workshop demonstrating an exemplary program where business skills training has successfully been provided to Ministry of Health Staff (Kenya) in collaboration with a business school (Strathmore, Nairobi, Kenya) at the  Kampala Forum,
  4. A compilation of existing research and case study materials on the private sector role in the HRH crisis in three domains: innovative approaches to insurance, purchasing and contracting, regulation/accreditation,
  5. A final report of the research findings completed by June 30, 2008.
